You’ve secured an interview. Now, you’re nervous. Don’t be – just follow these ten rules and you’ll put your best foot forwards.
- Don’t be late. If you’re going by public transport, go early, just in case.
- Dress suitably. Wear what you would wear on a typical day – but ensure your outfit is clean and simple. Use the iron before you leave.
- Don’t smoke, chew gum or eat any strong flavours before your interview.
- First impressions count. Smile when you first meet your interviewer, and ensure your handshake is firm (but not too firm).
- Be enthusiastic. Confidence and a friendly manner are a plus – just don’t go overboard.
- Listen carefully. If you ask a question that an employer has already covered, you won’t look good.
- Be positive. Don’t talk about bad experiences from previous jobs. Don’t give excuses. Instead, talk about what you learnt from experiences.
- Stay poised. Employers pay attention to non-verbal behaviour – sit straight, look them in the eye when you speak and don’t giggle or fidget.
- Be prepared. Make sure you know what the employer wants from an employee. And visit the company website before your interview, so you have an overview of the organisation.
- Above all, be yourself. Interviewers will always see through a façade – better to relax.
