Purpose
This visa is designed for:
- people with recognised skills seeking to work in Australia after being sponsored by an Australian or overseas employer; and
- for lawfully operating Australian and overseas Corporate entities to sponsor and employ skilled workers who have recognised qualifications and skills/or experience in particular occupations required in Australia
Process
An employer applies for a Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS). Once approved, they can sponsor approved skilled workers to work in Australia on a Subclass 457 temporary visa. can nominate a number of positions for different occupations under the same sponsorship application. Temporary visas can offer a pathway to a permanent visa.
Stages
This Visa Subclass has three stages i.e.
- Sponsorship: Employer applies to be a sponsor to recruit overseas skilled workers.
- Nomination: Employer nominates the occupations to be filled and the employees to fill those positions.
- Visa: Employer recruits the overseas workers to fill the nominated position(s) and the worker applies for a visa. Visa process may also involve skill assessment and English language testing.
Monitoring of Business Sponsors
Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has a firm Business Monitoring regime for the Sponsoring employers under this visa program. Employers who are approved as a Sponsor will be monitored to ensure that they are complying with their Sponsorship obligations. Where the Sponsoring employers fail to satisfy their Sponsorship obligations, DIAC may impose sanctions.
Visa
The Subclass 457 visa holders can be employed for a period of between one day and four years. These visa holders can bring any eligible secondary applicants with them to Australia – secondary applicants can work and study. After the initial entry of 457 visa holder and their secondary applicants, there is no limit on the number of times they travel in and out of Australia.
